AGRICULTURE AND LIVESTOCK IN ÇANAKKALE
Çanakkale is an assertive city in agriculture and livestock.
When considered the territory dissolution of Çanakkale 35% is made up of workable land while 54% of it is brake and forest.
Çanakkale’s tomatoes, Ezine Cheese, Ayvacık olive oil, Biga yoghurt and cheese dessert, Bayramiç apple and cherry, Umurbey peach, Bozcaada Çavuş grape, Gelibolu pilchard are the brands that come to mind when Çanakkale is mentioned.
The city which makes the agriculturel inventory performs the 5% of the country’s tomatoe production, 6% of olive production and 8% of peach production,
Çanakkale is not known as olive oil producer. However,the amount of the olive oil produced in Çanakkale is equal to the length of the Edremit Bay. Olive groves and olive oil factories are mostly found in Ayvacık, Ezine and Bayramiç districts. The oil groves in Çanakkale cover 27.695 hectares.
With the support of the Çanakkale Trade Stock Market, Ayvacık and Ezine Districts are included to the bay region olive oil’s patent application.
In our region viticulture and viniculture are mostly done in Bozcaada district. Çnakkale has an extremely old and long established viniculture.Recently grapevine is also seen as a source of good income.
In herbal products,wheat takes the first place with 400.000 ton. It is followed by olive, barley, sunflower, tomatoes, gruel, fig, cotton, apple, rice in the husk, pepper, watermelon, peach and cherry.
In our city in the existence of beef, the culture rate is 71% and this is above the region rate (59%) and also it is above the country’s rate (20%). However, the local race is fairly under the Turkey’s rate (7.5%) .
1% of the sheep presence is Merinos. This number is 10% for the region and 3% for Turkey. 30% of goat presence is Saanen cross bred milk goat.
With its 71% of total production,the milk takes the first place in animal output. As a result of this production Ezine, Bayramiç and Bigha districts are famous for their cheese.
As Çanakkale Trade Stock Market, we provided to have the geographical sign registry to Ezine cheese by giving all the support to the attempts which Ezine cheese and Dairy Development Association started.
With its 8.333 km coast length, Çanakkale is among the cities which have the longest sea shores in Turkey.Its fishery product’s exportation is in a good condition.In our city there are 13 enterprises which export to EU Countries and which have the EU Acceptance number.
The organic farming studies which are convenient to the EU norms are done on olive oil in Ayvacık, Gökçeada, Çanakkale; on fruit growing in Çanakkale, Bozcaada, Gökçeada, Lapseki; on vegetable growing (red pepper,tomatoes) in Çanakkale, Yenice, Biga and on honey in Gökçeada.
On prompting payment in Çanakkale, in 12/02/2006 dated offical gazzette, it was declared that supporting payments would not be paid to the producers of 2005 dated product cotton,sunflower oil, soybean,canola, Dane corn and olive oil. As our stock market by Turkish Union of Chambers and Stock Exchanges and Farm Ministry, as a result of the attempts it is understood that Premium payment for the cotton production is going to be done by our Farm Ministry by taking Çanakkale into the coverage area.
ÇANAKKALE’S ECONOMIC STRUCTURE
Although agriculture is the most important activity in city’s economy, recently agricultural based branches of industry show development. As a result of this, the role of the industry in economy increases.
In the city the industry based on land, the ceramic and kalebodur factories established in Çan, Akçansa cement factory in Ezine and the factories appraise frozen food, vegetables and fishery products like Dardanel and Ulubay in Çanakkale are the most important food production organization.
The frozen and dried food, fishery production, pulse, cement, mine ore, ceramic and floor tile are the most outcarried product fabricated in the exsisting industry enterprises.
The underwork studies in Biga and Çanakkale industrial zone were completed and the parcel allocation for the investors still continues.
TRANSPORTATION IN ÇANAKKALE
Çanakkale is an important city because it is situated in the two sides of Dardanelles which divides European and Asian Continents and because it is in the centre of the metropole cities, its transportation is also very important. Beside the highway and seaway transportation,the air way transportattion which is very crucial for our city has begun. 95% People in Çanakkale are literate people Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University is in the ascendency ascendancy and with each passing day it becomes more important among the other universities in Turkey. Approximately 20.000 students receive training.In the near future, the students who receive training in Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine will turn back to Çanakkale with the opening of Çanakkale Faculty of Medicine.And we give the neccesary support as the stock market and non governmental organizations. With taking the positive steps of medicine faculty, Çanakkale, the city of university,will also become the city of health.

We are going to take part in “Anatolive 2007, the first European-Asian Olive and Olive oil and proces fairs and congress which is going to be done with the strategical support of Turkey Exporters Assembly and Zeytindostu Olive and Olive oil Organization in İstanbul Fair Centre,in 25 january 2007 with our members who are engaged in olive oil.Within the context of this fair,the olive oils taken from the seven different regions are going to be introduced in each seven different reataurants and in hotels.In this way,we will have the chance to introduce the olive oil unique to Çanakkale.
By joining “ANUGA FOOD TEC” international food and drink industry Technologies specialism fair,which is going to be schemed in Germany in 2007 with our members and stands,we will have the chance to introduce all the products unique to Çanakkale in Germany.Our neccessary preparations relative to this subject have started.
